About this grant
This grant renewal provides general purpose support for CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, an international alliance established in 1993 to strengthen citizen action and civil society worldwide. Membership currently includes representatives from over 100 countries. Some of the grantee’s major programs are: 1) Civil Society Index, a research program on the state of civil society in more than 50 countries; 2) Every Human Has Rights awareness-raising and education campaign; and 3) Civil Society Watch, a program that mobilizes quick, public responses to situations where the freedom of civic association is threatened. CIVICUS also has programs on participatory governance; supporting national nonprofit associations; and legitimacy, transparency, and accountability. In 2009, it launched the Eurasia International Digital Exchange and Advocacy Network to support civil society in several former Soviet countries. Major activities in 2010 include organizing a World Assembly, releasing a new Civil Society Index report, and partnering with the United Nations Development Program.
