About this grant

Established in 1993, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is an international alliance dedicated to strengthening citizen action and civil society throughout the world. With partners in over 100 countries, the grantee’s work includes researching the state of civil society; raising awareness and education about civil society; and mobilizing quick, public responses to situations where civil society is threatened. Major activities in 2011 included the CIVICUS World Assembly with 800 participants from 98 countries, the establishment of the Lifeline Fund to assist civic organizations under threat, the completion of the Civil Society Index in 35 countries, and the launch of the South Africa Forum for International Solidarity. In 2012, some major planned activities include the production of the 2012 Global Report on the State of Civil Society, the development and piloting of a new Civil Society Index Rapid Assessment tool, and the compilation of resources on a new generation of civil society self-regulation mechanisms.
