About this grant

The Council on Foundations (COF) is the nation’s lead membership organization of private foundations, community foundations and corporate funders. It provides a range of services designed to improve the grantmaking practices of its constituency, encourage the growth of grantmaking organizations, and broaden governmental and public understanding of the role of foundations in society.Funding will enable COF to provide continued services to its members, including education and peer networking; information services; advocating for legislation, regulations and public policy; offering a range of specialized information for various kinds of foundations; and providing guidance on leadership development. In addition to general programming, COF provides services for community foundations and in the area of international grantmaking.Accomplishments during the past year included convening a family foundation conference, an annual conference and a community foundation conference; offering personal assistance and information resources; serving as a clearinghouse for a variety of data; continuing to advocate for legislation that reduces or repeals the excise tax on private foundations; providing both print and online versions of specialized information; and establishing a special program for foundation boards to strengthen the effectiveness of board and committee members and foundation officers.
