About this grant
Umtapo Centre implements programs that empower youth, community leaders, and women to better understand issues of peace, human rights, and antiracism in South Africa. It uses participatory popular education to create awareness and encourages communities to be involved in issues that impact their lives. Past support from Mott enabled the grantee to support the formation of peace forums for young people of different age groups, produce a quarterly newsletter which also serves as a conversation starter on various topics related to human rights, and support communities to set up self-help projects. This grant will provide general purpose support to the grantee to continue implementing programs that empower youth and communities; encourage self-reliance; and promote the principles of Ubuntu, an African philosophy that promotes humanity toward others. The grantee will also continue to build strong partnerships locally and internationally with institutions that promote the same principles.
