About this grant

Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute (PHI) is a nonprofit think tank created to develop systems for training and managing agencies employing healthcare workers. PHI works to increase direct-care worker quality and institutional productivity in order to increase livable wages, and to recommend, test, propose policy and advocate for ways to fill the void in direct healthcare workers.Funding will enable PHI to support direct-care practice innovations within seven long-term care facilities and five home care agencies; develop, implement and disseminate customized job quality measurements for its work with long-term care facilities and home care agencies; expand its activities and policy impact nationally; create a unified state policy approach to benefit direct-care workers; and build the Direct-Care Alliance by conducting at least three policy education retreats for direct-care workers. After completing a strategic plan, PHI restructured its Cooperative Healthcare Network into a more concentrated network including New York, Philadelphia and Manchester, New Hampshire. In addition to working with the network, PHI served as a key resource to stakeholders and government agencies in several states; and participated in key national policy activities such as launching Better Jobs/Better Care, a five-state demonstration program, and assisting the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services with training and education.
