About this grant
This grant enables the Genesee Area Focus Fund to implement job training and summer employment opportunities for Flint area youth ages 14-18 and in grades 9-12. The 2011 Summer Youth Initiative provides workforce development training to prepare Flint area teens for summer employment, funding for area nonprofits and businesses to hire teens to work in their respective summer programs, and volunteer opportunities to encourage civic engagement among Flint area youth. The 2010 Summer Youth Initiative funded 19 nonprofit agencies and seven local businesses to employ 395 teenagers and 15 youth supervisors during the summer of 2010. Another 52 teenagers were employed by seven nonprofit agencies from September through December 2010. The grantee’s goal for 2011 is to train and employ 500 teenagers through the Summer Youth Initiative.
