About this grant
This grant will enable the Gulf Restoration Network to build its capacity and that of local groups throughout Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi working on issues related to the Gulf of Mexico. The network is a partnership of local, regional and national organizations concerned about the health of freshwater and brackish ecosystems that drain into the Gulf.Multiyear funding will support the network’s efforts to provide technical assistance and networking opportunities to its member groups and others active in the region. Specific activities will include working in 4 to 5 watersheds throughout Louisiana and Mississippi to educate and encourage citizen involvement in the protection of water resources; protecting the fresh and brackish water wetlands and bottomland hardwood forests of Louisiana and Mississippi; encouraging sustainable fisheries; and building organizational capacity.Recently, environmental and public infrastructure damage wrought by hurricanes Katrina and Rita has been widely felt across the Gulf Coast. This grant includes additional funding that will enable the network to engage its staff and member organizations in important hurricane recovery activities at the local, state and federal levels.
