About this grant
Louisiana’s freshwater resources, while still extensive and productive, are under considerable stress. The state is one of the nation’s largest generators of toxic pollutants. This situation was made more serious by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, which caused additional damage to environmental and public health conditions throughout southern Louisiana. This grant will support the Louisiana Environmental Action Network’s efforts to improve the state’s water quality permitting activities as well as respond to special water quality policy needs brought on by the two storms.Recent achievements include constructive reforms in Louisiana’s water permitting practices, improvements in specific water quality discharge permits and positive changes in the disposal of hurricane-related debris.
