About this grant
The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana – founded in 1988 – is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the swamps, marshes and coastline that lie within the state’s coastal plain. A consortium of non-governmental organizations, local government agencies, civic and religious groups, and business leaders, the coalition plays a key role in promoting initiatives and building support for restoration that is based on the natural functions and values of the region’s freshwater systems.Multiyear funding will enable the coalition to define the key elements of an effective, timely and accountable coastal restoration and stewardship plan; build additional stakeholder support; secure commitments from the state of Louisiana and the federal government to implement a joint state/federal coastal restoration and stewardship program; advance a comprehensive coastal restoration and stewardship plan; and take the lead in developing a land trust that will complement other restoration efforts. In response to the significant and unprecedented damage to the freshwater ecosystems of the coast of Louisiana wrought by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, additional funding will partially replace anticipated funding from local sources that has not materialized and allow the organization to quickly and effectively respond to the new challenges presented by the two storms.
