About this grant
The Detroit Entrepreneurship Institute has provided entrepreneurial training and related services for the past 12 years to individuals transitioning from welfare to self-sufficiency. The institute uses a "one-stop" approach to promote the development and delivery of entrepreneurial skills.Funding will enable the institute to continue providing business development services and technical assistance to individuals receiving public assistance, dislocated workers and the working poor. Services include entrepreneurial training, small business development services, economic literacy and start-up capital. In 2001, an Individual Development Account program was started to help participants save for a home or an education or to invest in their own business.Since October 1990, more than 4,000 adults and youth have enrolled in business training programs; 2,300 have completed training; and 689 are currently operating their own small businesses.
