About this grant
The Harlem Children’s Zone, established in 1970, is a community-based organization dedicated to improving the lives of children in Central Harlem. During the past three decades, it has built a network of neighborhood-based preservation programs to address the critical needs of children.Multiyear funding will enable the organization to expand its boundaries to serve an additional 3,800 children during the first year; complete construction of a new headquarters building; launch a charter academy; increase and improve evaluation efforts; and develop the Practitioner’s Institute to help other low-income communities of color replicate the program.Since its inception, the number of programs has grown from six to 15 and the number of children receiving services has increased from 1,500 to 8,000. The programs have resulted in significant community revitalization.
