About this grant

Since 1996, the Brookings Institution’s Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy has been working to advance healthy metropolitan growth through research and policy development activities. By examining the role of public policy, private-sector initiatives, market forces and demographic changes in shaping metropolitan growth patterns, the center has identified policies that can help communities grow in more balanced and environmentally sensitive ways.Multiyear funding will enable the center to continue research on the major trends affecting cities and metropolitan areas throughout the country, particularly the extent to which state policies facilitate sprawl and undermine cities and older suburbs. In addition, the center will work to define and promote policy reforms that encourage healthy metropolitan growth by working with leaders in selected cities and older suburbs, particularly in Michigan.
