About this grant
The Community Development Unit, based at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in the Eastern Cape, provides training and support to community-based organizations. The main objective of the unit is to strengthen community participation in health and development.Multiyear funding will enable the unit to help local health authorities obtain government funding for home-based caregivers who are caring for those suffering from HIV/AIDS; train women who, for the most part, are responsible for community-health projects; assist community-based organizations in developing funding strategies and proposals to gain support; provide training and support to health officials and community leaders in community health and primary health care; and build the capacity of local health committees and community-based organizations in project planning and management.Recent accomplishments included establishing pilot sites in two districts; providing training for home-based caregivers in these districts; helping community-based organizations with their funding proposals; and identifying additional districts needing services.
