About this grant
Created in 1984 by five neighborhood organizations and a church, Salem Housing Community Development Corporation has as its mission the improvement of family living conditions through the provision of safe, decent, and affordable housing. Mott Foundation funding will support the general purposes of the organization, which serves a 132-block area in northwest Flint. Activities include property management, a lease-to-purchase program, and community building. During the past year, it assisted 13 families in purchasing homes; rehabilitated seven occupied houses; restored three vacant houses and, with the assistance of volunteers who contributed 2,658 hours of work, began the restoration of four additional houses. Approximately 80 individuals graduated from the homebuyer’s class series, 50 of whom have applied for home loans. Homeowner counseling was provided to 44 families.
