About this grant
The Carpathian Foundation works in the contiguous areas of Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations and local governments to promote economic development, cross-border cooperation and interethnic initiatives. The foundation works through local offices in each of the five countries.Multiyear funding will enable the foundation to pursue the goals of assisting in the socioeconomic development of rural communities in the Carpathian Euroregion; improving regional cohesion and identity; and strengthening the relationships between the region and broader Europe. Key grantmaking programs include capacity building, integrated rural community development, cross-border cooperation, inter-ethnic relations, best practices of local governments, cultural heritage and the Romanet program.Since its inception, the Carpathian Foundation has awarded more than 1,100 grants totaling more than $5 million to non-governmental organizations and local governments throughout the region. Accomplishments included creating new models of local economic development; encouraging innovation within local governments; helping to preserve the unique cultural heritage of the region; and promoting the development of the region’s intellectual resources by providing networking opportunities for universities and think tanks.
