About this grant
The concept of community foundations has been germinating in South Africa since the early 1990s. From 1998 to 2002, the Southern African Grantmakers Association tested the model in over ten communities, and one of the results was the establishment of the Greater Rustenburg Community Foundation in June 2000. This foundation is one of only a few community foundations successfully developed in South Africa. Recent core activities included mobilizing and distributing resources to local nonprofits, conducting community needs assessments, providing technical assistance to 200 nonprofits through a newly established center, funding more than 50 nonprofits totaling R1.5 million, and developing a youth philanthropy program. This renewal grant will support the continuation of core activities, in addition to providing skills development and mentoring for the foundation’s managers and staff. The Greater Rustenburg Community Foundation makes grants and provides capacity-building support to community-based organizations in the Northwest province.
