About this grant

The Halifax Initiative is a coalition of Canadian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that work to promote reforms in international financial institutions. Included in the coalition are environmental, development, faith-based and human rights NGOs.Multiyear funding will enable the coalition to focus on increasing parliamentary accountability related to Canadian government actions at the international financial institutions; expanding Canadian public support for policies at the international financial institutions that promote environmental sustainability, equitable development and democratic accountability; and broadening public accountability of international financial institutions to include international environment, labor and human rights standards. To achieve these goals, the coalition will conduct research, education and outreach to the public and policymakers; monitor international financial institutions’ projects; and promote policy reform and coalition building.During the past two years, the coalition increased the number of Canadian NGOs participating in reform work; strengthened the environmental and human rights aspects of its work; and contributed to international NGO understanding of the links between elected officials and governance of international financial institutions.
