About this grant

The mission of New York Rivers United (NYRU) – founded in 1992 by a network of New York river groups – is to conserve, protect and restore the state’s rivers and riverine ecosystems. Because New York’s waterways are among the most heavily dammed in the U.S., NYRU has been working to negotiate and monitor the implementation of new operating licenses for nonfederal hydropower dams and promoting the removal of obsolete small dams.Multiyear funding will enable NYRU to monitor the implementation of negotiated settlements; develop a program to address the economic, ecological and public safety benefits derived from the removal of obsolete small dams; and create a broader river restoration program.
