About this grant
This grant provides core support to the Association for Civil Society Development – SMART, a professional training and resource organization for the nonprofit sector in Croatia. The grantee’s mission is to build the capacity of nongovernmental organizations and informal citizen groups to respond to community needs. To this end, the grantee is providing training and resources to the nonprofit sector, strengthening structured cooperation between the public and nonprofit sectors, and promoting volunteerism and philanthropy in local communities. In 2006-2008, the grantee provided training and direct technical assistance to over 550 representatives from nongovernmental organizations, informal associations, and local government and published widely distributed resource materials. Through its volunteer center, the grantee maintains a database of 26 organizations and institutions that have been trained to work with volunteers. Based in Rijeka, Croatia, the grantee is a key member of several Croatia-wide nonprofit sector networks addressing volunteerism, rural development, and professional training.
