About this grant

The Eastern Cape NGO Coalition works to address developmental challenges in the Eastern Cape through a network of strong and effective non-governmental and community-based organizations. The Eastern Cape is one of the poorest provinces in South Africa, and the coalition advocates on behalf of nonprofits to work toward the elimination of poverty.Multiyear funding will support activities that include ensuring a smooth leadership transition for the new director; developing and strengthening the regional structures of the coalition; monitoring the provincial government’s implementation of the Provincial Growth and Development Plan; and producing and disseminating information on rights, basic services and local development plans.Accomplishments during the past two years included participating in a provincial growth and development strategy for the Eastern Cape; hosting events leading up to the World Summit on Sustainable Development that was held in Johannesburg in 2003; increasing the coalition’s membership; and collaborating with provincial and local governments to ensure the provision of basic services to poor communities.
