About this grant

This grant will support the Women in Leadership Program, a project of the Desmond Tutu Peace Trust, that involves training courses and mentoring programs targeting women leaders of non-governmental and community-based organizations in South Africa and the southern Africa region. The academy was established to provide leadership development programs for women. The main goals of the academy are to strengthen personal leadership skills and promote organizational excellence within nonprofits.Multiyear funding will support program objectives including examining challenges facing women in positions of leadership; creating a safe learning space for women; exploring opportunities available to women to enhance their leadership; promoting future thinking and strategic planning to advance women in leadership; bringing participants into contact with inspirational women figures; and building a strong network of influential women leaders. Funding includes a grant increase to enable the academy to expand the training program by adding a visual history-training component. The aim of this training is to develop the skills and capacity of women to visually record the lessons, experiences and challenges of providing leadership in their communities.Previous accomplishments included reaching more than 400 women in all nine provinces in South Africa; establishing a women’s writing collective and mentorship network; and developing education and training materials for women on issues ranging from poverty and development to HIV/AIDS and peace building.
