About this grant
In 2001, the Great Lakes governors and premiers signed an addendum to the Great Lakes Charter, commonly called "Annex 2001," which established new management principles for the withdrawal and diversion of Great Lakes waters. Since then, officials have been working to transform the Annex 2001 statement into a practical implementation program. The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) has been a leader in this policy arena, both before and after the adoption of Annex 2001. Multiyear funding will enable NWF to collaborate with key water users to build support for the Annex 2001 process; promote the Annex 2001 process through public education and media relations; provide networking services, financial resources and technical assistance to partners; and educate opinion leaders and public officials involved in the Annex 2001 process. Funding includes a grant increase that will enable the federation to promote full implementation of Annex 2001 principles by continuing to provide financial support to local- and state-level organizations working on its implementation.
