About this grant
The Institute on Race and Poverty was established in 1993 to identify and address problems caused when racial and economic discrimination combine to create barriers to opportunity for low-income communities of color. The institute’s long-term goals include defining "racialized" poverty and its implications; promoting multiple strategies; reframing public discourse on race and poverty to improve conditions for low-income people of color; and increasing opportunities for low-income people of color to participate in, and transform, democratic processes and structures.Funding will enable the institute to conduct strategic planning; maintain existing relationships and develop new relationships with people and organizations to mutually strengthen organizational effectiveness; strengthen its ability to respond to its constituency; and expand the public education agenda. In addition, the institute will focus on two areas of research: exploring the development of growing employment centers and accessibility to these centers for people of color; and examining the legal issues involving regional equity including taxes, housing and governance.
