About this grant

This grant will enable the Center for Community Change to continue its Education Project, which supports local community-driven school reform efforts. Over the years, the center has helped grassroots community organizations in their efforts to improve the quality of public education in low-income communities.Multiyear funding will support activities that include providing technical assistance to a minimum of six organizations per year; offering education organizing consulting; helping local organizations pursue a statewide strategy in two states; reshaping the message and debate about public education in the United States; and expanding the use and usefulness of publications.Recent accomplishments included providing in-depth technical assistance to six organizing groups; organizing and leading a retreat on the No Child Left Behind Act for nine education organizers; publishing a quarterly newsletter that identifies promising education issues being addressed; developing an Internet-based tool to help organizers and leaders understand how federal education law affects local school issues; and designing an "Action Guide to Education Organizing" for community groups.
