About this grant

Third World Network Berhad (TWN), an international network of developing country non-governmental organizations (NGOs), provides research and analysis of global issues and their impact on developing countries. Following the 1999 World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial meeting, it was felt that NGOs were limited in their opportunities to participate in ongoing trade discussions in Geneva. To address this, TWN and other international NGOs set up offices in Geneva.Multiyear funding will enable the network to increase awareness of the impacts of international finance and trade on sustainable development and strengthen the capacity of NGOs and decisionmakers in developing countries to effectively participate in international discussions on these issues. Objectives include identifying current trends in the processes of globalization and trade liberalization; providing policy alternatives and mitigating measures to respond to the adverse impacts of globalization and trade liberalization; building the capacity of NGOs and communities in developing countries to provide more effective responses; and monitoring policies and trends in international agencies, such as the WTO, International Monetary Fund, World Bank and United Nations agencies.Recent activities included increasing the capacity of both NGOs and decisionmakers in developing countries to better understand the processes and impacts of the global trade negotiations; and providing analyses and policy proposals at the international level, including the 2003 WTO Ministerial meeting and key United Nations conferences.
