About this grant
GONG was established in 1997 as a network of organizations and citizens dedicated to increasing the transparency of the electoral system and the level of citizen participation in the democratic process. Multiyear funding will enable GONG to focus its activities on three program areas: monitoring local and national elections and raising public awareness of election processes; increasing public confidence and participation in local and national assemblies; and networking with similar organizations in Central/Eastern Europe as well as international organizations.Recent accomplishments included providing election-monitoring training to more than 13,500 volunteeers; helping more than 58,000 high school students participate in "I vote for the first time" workshops; conducting visits to the national parliament for more than 10,000 people; organizing 550 "citizens’ hours" for citizens to participate in discussions with local and national elected officials; and recruiting 57 students for an internship program that places them in offices of members of parliament and various government officials.
