About this grant
The University of KwaZulu-Natal was formally established in 2004 as a result of a merger between the Universities of Durban Westville and Natal in South Africa. The Centre for Civil Society was established at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and promotes the study of South African civil society as a legitimate area of scholarly activity. It generates and shares knowledge on topical issues, builds partnerships with civil society, and facilitates debate and reflection on the nature of civil society. Past support enabled the grantee to host events to discuss civil society challenges in the KwaZulu-Natal province. Additionally, the grantee supported community scholars to address challenges in their communities; generate academic knowledge; conduct research on social, environmental, and economic justice; and teach courses in the development studies Master’s program. This grant will provide continued support to facilitate the community scholars program, conduct research on the various forms of participation at the local level, and partner with other civil society organizations in the KwaZulu-Natal province to promote social cohesion.
