About this grant

This grant will enable the Environmental Management and Law Association (EMLA) to continue efforts to encourage Hungarian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to advocate for environmental reform and policymaking in Hungary. EMLA was established in 1992 to develop and implement legal and management mechanisms for improving the legal framework of the Hungarian NGO sector. Multiyear funding will support activities that include increasing NGO participation in legislative and policy development processes; and building the capacity of NGOs to advocate for environmental reform. In addition, during the next two years EMLA will conduct an extensive review of the legislation governing the Hungarian nonprofit sector, the NOSZA project.Recent accomplishments included improving understanding among NGOs about the importance of joint action in addressing nonprofit legislation; helping two groups – one of NGO representatives interested in NGO legislation and the other of lawyers and legal experts involved with NGO legislation – to exchange experiences and ideas and develop consensus on needed improvements in nonprofit legislation; disseminating information to NGOs about legislative changes affecting the nonprofit sector; and establishing strategic cooperation with the Hungarian government and key NGOs.
