About this grant
For nearly 40 years, Focus: HOPE has served thousands of low-income Detroit residents through a range of programs to alleviate poverty and promote civil rights. Key programs are its food distribution program, which serves 45,000 families a month, and its educational programs, such as remedial programs to improve math and reading levels; the Machinist Training Institute (MTI); and the Information Technologies Center (ITC).Funding will support goals that include expanding student enrollment in all training programs; increasing manufacturing sales, thereby increasing earned income; improving in-program retention so that more students complete the MTI program; and continuing to expand the food distribution program. To date, programs have resulted in more than 2,500 people becoming licensed machinists; 5,596 have improved their reading and mathematics comprehension; more than 500 have graduated and are now employed in information technology; and more than 100 have received bachelor or associate degrees from the Center for Advanced Technologies.
