About this grant

The Steve Biko Foundation was established in 1998 in support of the leadership and vision of the late Stephen Bantu Biko, one of the founding figures of the black consciousness movement in South Africa, who was brutally murdered by the South African security forces in September 1977. It works mainly with young people, youth organizations and schools to bridge the racial, ethnic and social divides that decades of institutionalized racial division and segregation have left behind. This grant will enable the Steve Biko Foundation to continue its various programs and activities, particularly those that focus on identity, leadership and development.During the past two years, the organization has encouraged national dialogue through lectures and seminars, including the annual Steve Biko Memorial Lecture; hosted the Matthew Goniwe Youth Leadership Conference, which provides a space for learning, exchange of experience and sharing among youth drawn from diverse constituencies; and organized seminars and workshops on topics ranging from globalization, to women and development, to culture and history.
