About this grant
Founded in September 1998, the Steve Biko Foundation is a nonprofit trust that gives contemporary meaning and expression to the leadership legacy of the late Bantu Stephen Biko. Biko was one of the founding figures of the black consciousness movement in South Africa and was murdered by the South African security police in September 1977. The foundation’s main objective is to promote, nurture, and develop community-based leadership across the race, color, and ethnic divide. During the past grant period, the foundation met this objective by promoting national dialogue through lectures, seminars, publications, as well as implementing programs focusing on arts, culture, and identity; economic justice; and social development. Future plans include the continuation and expansion of programs, substantially increasing the foundation’s staff; greater focus on policy development, research, and publications; and fundraising for an endowment.
