About this grant
The Perm-36 Memorial Center of the History of Political Repression, located on the site of the former Perm-36 prison camp for political dissenters, has been established to serve as a memorial to the millions who suffered and died in the Soviet "Gulag" camp system. Along with preserving and reconstructing the camp, the museum organizes public education programs on 20th century Russian history and totalitarianism, particularly for Russian youth, teachers and university instructors.Multiyear funding will support reconstruction, restoration and conservation; permanent and traveling exhibitions; special projects, including courses for schools on civic rights and history; and organizational development.During the past three years, approximately half of the former camp buildings were restored and adapted, while the others were preserved to avoid deterioration by the elements.
