About this grant

The IFI Small Grants Fund was created by Global Greengrants Fund in 2002 to support grassroots organizations in developing countries working to influence environmentally and socially harmful development projects and policies of international financial institutions (IFIs). The project enables grassroots organizations to build local capacity to participate in global efforts to reform IFIs.Multiyear funding will support objectives that include increasing the number of grassroots organizations working on IFI-related projects in developing countries; connecting local, regional, national and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working to influence projects and policy reform efforts; encouraging collaboration and joint action among members of affected communities, NGOs, scientists, legal experts and local decisionmakers; building visibility for environmental actors and organizations; ensuring that IFIs promote environmentally, socially and culturally sustainable development; and monitoring the effectiveness of the IFI small grants program.During the past two years, small grants supported NGO engagement on a number of key IFI-related projects and policy reform efforts such as resource extraction projects, trade and infrastructure IFI initiatives, privatization issues and large development projects.
