About this grant

The purpose of EURONATURA’s ECA-Iberia Campaign is to encourage Portuguese and Spanish export credit agencies (ECAs) to require environmental impact assessments of all proposed projects; disclose relevant information; and adopt environmental and social criteria for project funding. Although the role of ECAs in the world economy has increased, these institutions have not been actively developing policies to adhere to environmental and social safeguard standards adopted in 2003.Multiyear funding will enable the campaign to encourage both the Portuguese and Spanish ECAs to improve transparency, access to information and public participation in their decisionmaking processes; monitor both Portuguese and Spanish ECAs’ implementation of standards; support the development of stronger standards for project evaluation; and increase public awareness of ECAs and their potential positive role in international finance.Accomplishments during the past two years included establishing the Iberian ECA network; publishing in-depth research on both Portuguese and Spanish ECAs’ decisionmaking processes; developing strong working relationships with key staff of Portuguese and Spanish ECAs; and actively participating in international ECA reform activities.
