About this grant

The Gender Education and Training Network (GETNET) provides training, research and education to women throughout South Africa, with special emphasis on strengthening their presence in both government and non-governmental organizations. Created 10 years ago in Cape Town, it has established links with a broad range of gender organizations in the country and the southern Africa region.Multiyear funding will enable the network to continue working to achieve greater gender equality in the country, in particular addressing the issues of poverty and the development of women at the local level. It will also work to increase the capacity and understanding of local officials of the effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic on women. Objectives include building greater gender awareness among men; cooperating with government and civil society to advance gender equality and hold governments accountable to their commitments on gender issues; and working directly with policy and decisionmakers to encourage change at the highest institutional levels.Accomplishments during the past two years included receiving partial accreditation for its gender training courses; assisting local governments in developing policies and plans that consider the specific needs of women; convening workshops and seminars for women from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds; and sharing lessons and experiences with similar organizations in the region.
