About this grant
The Democracy Development Programme works with civil society and government institutions in KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa to promote citizen participation in local governance processes, a human rights culture, and good governance. This grant supports community participation and a culture of democracy and cooperation at the local level through the training of ward committee members, the elected structures that represent community interest at local government level, and municipal councilors and officials. The grantee initiated this project in 2004, and to date, 56 training workshops have been held with various municipal and civil society structures. Over the next two years, major activities will include revising the book "Partners in Transformation", conducting and evaluating training workshops for municipal and community representatives, and facilitating multistakeholder community forums.
