About this grant
The Democracy Development Programme was established in 1993 to promote citizen participation, human rights, and good governance in the KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa. It works with local government institutions, civil society organizations, and communities to encourage accountability and civic engagement. Past support has enabled the grantee to train ward committee members (elected officials representing community interests at local government), traditional leaders, civil society leaders, and communities in order to promote social cohesion, cooperation, and a culture of democracy and inclusiveness. This grant will allow the grantee to continue providing training that encourages mutual accountability and dialogue between the local governance structures and other sectors of society. It will also raise public awareness of citizens’ rights and responsibilities through media and other platforms.
