About this grant

This grant will enable the Spirals Trust to continue to work with communities, groups and individuals on issues of identity and values to encourage transformation, healing and social justice. Emphasis will be on restoring identities that were violated by the injustices of the past and promoting human rights, dignity and equality. Key areas of work over the next two years will include a youth empowerment program, community-based organizations working on issues of HIV/AIDS and training educators in the Eastern Cape.Specific activities during the past two years included running an internship program to train staff from other nonprofits in the region in the methods of conflict mediation, facilitation and healing; designing and facilitating a curriculum in education and life skills for youth, in partnership with the University of Rhodes in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape; conducting workshops on youth empowerment in many of the rural areas in the Eastern Cape; and organizing training programs for resident leaders at Rhodes University. In 2005, Spirals Trust also conducted a comprehensive external evaluation of its work and developed a plan for its future activities. The Spirals Trust works with communities in the Eastern Cape that were affected by violence and conflict during the years of struggle against apartheid.
