About this grant

People Acting for Community Together (PACT) is one of eight sites participating in a study to examine the effects of community organizing on education reform in low-performing districts and schools. PACT, a congregation-based, community-organizing group in Miami has been working to improve public education since 1994.Multiyear funding will enable PACT to pursue goals that include improving student achievement in reading; improving the quality of afterschool programs and expanding access to such programs; exploring other education issues that can be addressed by the community; working to increase its influence on education issues; and participating in an eight-site study to explore the contribution of education organizing to education reform efforts in low-performing districts and schools.Recent accomplishments included helping schools to implement and support the Direct Instruction reading curriculum; broadening its organizing model to include schools as members; and establishing a task force to focus on afterschool programs.
