About this grant
The Pro Democracy Association was established to strengthen local democracy in Romania. For almost 15 years, it has been encouraging Romanian citizens to participate in decisionmaking processes through 28 local branches, called clubs.Multiyear funding will support efforts to increase the capacity of select local branches to engage citizens in activities related to local democracy; act as resource centers for people and local government on new legislation related to civic participation in public decisions; and increase their visibility locally. Objectives include attracting more citizens; increasing the knowledge of local branches regarding effective civic participation and new European Union-related legislation; building the capacity of local branches to respond to community needs; and improving coordination between local and national levels.Accomplishments during the past two years included strengthening the capacity of the network of local branches; hiring and training permanent staff in select branches to support other branches and partners; and maintaining regular, quality communication through a monthly newsletter, Web site and annual report.
