About this grant
In June 2001, the Great Lakes governors and premiers signed Annex 2001, an addition to the Great Lakes Charter that established principles for a new, ecologically based water management system for the Great Lakes basin. Since then, officials have been working to develop an interstate compact (the Great Lakes compact) and other agreements to implement Annex 2001 This grant will enable Environmental Advocates of New York to continue educating constituencies about Annex 2001 issues.Multiyear funding will support efforts to fully engage local and regional media in the basin and across the state; help community groups, local officials and other interested parties to build public support for the Great Lakes compact process; provide background information and briefings on the compact and related policies to a wide range of public officials; build stronger working relationships with Canadian non-governmental organizations; and work on related policy issues that reinforce the goals of Annex 2001 and the Great Lakes compact.Recent achievements included generating considerable public support for the Annex 2001 principles; garnering extensive media coverage in New York; and participating on the Governor’s Annex 2001 Advisory Committee.
