About this grant

Friends of the Earth is the United States affiliate of an international network of environmental organizations based in 70 countries. Through this project, the grantee works to advance environmental and social safeguards of key international development finance institutions; and ensure that financing for low-carbon development in developing countries (known as climate finance) is adequate, democratically governed, and adheres to high environmental and social standards. The grantee’s policy work over the last grant period contributed to significant increases in domestic export credit agencies lending for renewable energy and to the Chinese adoption of new guidelines for their lending to developing countries. Over the next grant period, the grantee will undertake research, monitoring, and advocacy on World Bank safeguards; provide advocacy assistance to Chinese organizations to test the new Chinese lending guidelines; and monitor the design of the international climate finance mechanism, as well as develop policy proposals for its environmental and social standards.
