About this grant

The Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre’s Women’s Leadership Institute works with women leaders in the Eastern Cape on the challenges involved in eliminating violence against women. The goal of the institute is to help women build strong grassroots organizations that will be able to work effectively with local authorities, tribal structures and the criminal justice system on the best interventions to address violence against women.Multiyear funding will enable the institute to adapt training and materials for women in community-based organizations, including a leadership support program involving mentoring and coaching of locally based women leaders. Activities will include conducting leadership consultation sessions with local women to assess their needs; providing leadership training courses, conferences, seminars and workshops; coordinating retreats for the directors of organizations; and organizing workshops on project management, report and proposal writing, and advocacy and mentoring skills.Recent accomplishments included coordinating a national conference in 2003 on men’s responsibility to end violence against women; strengthening women’s leadership capacity in project management, financial management, and proposal and report writing; teaching counseling skills in the areas of human rights, gender and HIV/AIDS; training more than 15,000 women during the past nine years; and assisting women to establish nonprofit and community-based organizations in the Eastern Cape.
