About this grant
Ikhala Trust is a community grantmaker working in one of the poorest provinces in South Africa, the Eastern Cape. It makes small grants and provides training to community-based organizations in poor and rural communities. Over the past two years, the grantee made small grants to community-based organizations working with HIV/AIDS patients, orphans and vulnerable children, nutritional health, and entrepreneurial projects. It also led the establishment of a network of organizations that promote the use of the asset-based community development approach in transforming communities. This approach encourages the use of local assets as a basis for community development. Over the next two years, the grantee will continue to make small grants, provide training to community-based organizations on the asset-based community development approach, host learning events for grantmakers and other development organizations to exchange lessons and experiences, and develop practical tools that will support its grantees when applying the principles of the asset-based community development approach.
