About this grant

Since its establishment in 2002, the Michigan Suburbs Alliance has played an increasingly important role on issues affecting the fiscal, economic and environmental health of communities and metropolitan areas in Michigan. This grant will enable the alliance to continue strengthening communities through research, regional cooperation, public education and policy development.Multiyear funding will support activities that include building the capacity of member communities to attract redevelopment investment; encourage enhanced regional cooperation and resource sharing among communities; and establish a shared urban policy agenda. Specific projects include the Redevelopment Ready Communities project to change market perceptions of older communities and encourage new investment; the Partnership for Redevelopment, a collaboration to help communities realize cost savings through efficiencies generated by regional cooperation and coordination of shared city services; a program that brings graduate students into alliance communities to provide planning and design assistance; and assisting the Detroit office of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation in implementing model economic development initiatives.
