About this grant
In 2003, the Synergos Institute created the U.S./Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership to improve the quality of life for low-income families on the U.S./Mexico border by strengthening the leadership, programs and institutional resources of 21 community foundations located there. Multiyear funding will enable the institute to provide training to community foundations to improve organizational capacity; strengthen peer learning, advocacy and the communications network; encourage additional partnerships among businesses, government and foundations; and create a capacity-building support infrastructure for community foundations along the border.Accomplishments during the first phase of the partnership included incorporating six new community foundations; launching grants programs in housing, environmental justice and poverty alleviation to benefit low-income families; fostering cross-border learning events ; completing a community asset mapping effort to help community foundations target grantmaking; identifying and connecting nonprofits and local donors; and providing capacity-building services and seminars.
