About this grant

During the past decade, the international growth of the community foundation field has precipitated the need to convene key community foundation leaders to share information and exchange best practices. In response, the Worldwide Initiative for Grantmaker Support (WINGS), a project of the European Foundation Centre, is sponsoring a conference to bring together 175 leaders from community foundations, support organizations and academic centers to discuss common issues and concerns.Funding will support the conference, “Community Foundations: Symposium on a Global Movement,” to be conducted in Berlin in December 2004. To ensure global participation, WINGS is planning for 35 percent participation from Europe, including Central/Eastern Europe and Russia; 15 percent from Africa; 30 percent from North America, including Mexico and Canada; and the balance from Asia and Central/South America. Conference goals include raising the profile of community foundations globally; discussing the role of community foundations in creating and enhancing civil society; comparing different models of community philanthropy; and encouraging academic research and increasing knowledge of the field.
