About this grant
The Three Continents Film Festival, hosted by Lawyers for Human Rights, brings together film and documentary makers from the Americas, Africa and Asia to display and share their work on the themes of democracy, racism and human rights. To commemorate a decade of democracy in South Africa, the third festival will be held in South Africa in 2004.Funding will provide continued support to a film festival whose objectives are to expose audiences to human rights issues from around the world and to promote dialogue, discussion and debate on social justice, race and nationalism. Topics and themes will include 10 years of South African democracy, post-liberation democracy in other countries, gender empowerment, discrimination and racism, refugees, and violence against women.Achievements from the first two festivals included promoting local film production and stimulating dialogue among independent film-makers; reaching sectors of the population on issues such as human rights and racism; raising awareness of specific human rights issues and abuses; creating a greater appreciation and awareness of human rights in South Africa; and highlighting challenges such as HIV/AIDS and encouraging people and communities to play a more active part in combating the epidemic.
