About this grant
Film and video are widely considered to wield a powerful influence on shaping people’s world views, the values of the societies in which they live and even their own understanding of themselves. Following a successful first Three Continents Film Festival in Argentina in September 2002, the second film festival will be held in South Africa in September 2003.Funding will support films and documentaries focusing on transitional justice and human rights related themes. Stories from the Americas, Africa and Asia will feature victims and perpetrators as well as narratives on justice, peace and reconciliation. After the festival, 12 videos from the top 20 films and documentaries will be produced for special television broadcasts in South Africa and the wider southern Africa region.Lawyers for Human Rights was established in 1979 in South Africa to challenge the abuse and violation of human rights committed by the apartheid state. It was instrumental in preparing the country for the transition to democracy and continues to serve as a major voice in developing the culture of human rights in South Africa.
