About this grant
The Mott Foundation Leadership Academy, operated by the Genesee Area Focus Fund, was launched in 2000 at the request of students who were attending the Community of Greater Flint’s Summer Youth Program. The leadership academy was created to help Flint youth develop teamwork and leadership skills that will help them succeed in school, in the workplace and in life. It serves approximately 300 young people, ages 14 to 18, most of whom live in Flint and come from economically disadvantaged households.Funding will enable the academy to introduce leadership training and design educational development plans that will help participants create a personal “roadmap” detailing their goals and aspirations, as well as possible obstacles and ways to overcome them. In addition to offering eight weekly sessions for first-time participants, alumni will be offered advanced training through five day-long sessions. The Genesee Area Focus Fund is a consortium of nonprofit, education and business leaders that focuses on economic development issues affecting the competitive economy and quality of life in Genesee County.
